- What's changed?
In 2009, Smarties were updated to be made with No Artificial Colours. We have further improved your favourite Smarties to now also be made with Natural Flavours. So there are two more reasons for you to choose Smarties as both you and your family’s favourite treat.
- What do you mean "natural flavours"?
"Natural flavours" are substances which impart flavours that have been sourced from plant or animal sources.
- What was the change?
Artificial Vanillin is a synthetic flavour that is used as a substitute for vanilla and was the flavour we used in our Smarties. It is a common ingredient found in many products and used by cooks at home. We have now replaced artificial vanillin with vanilla. The change fits with the trend to healthier lifestyles and greater demand for fewer artificial ingredients.
- Why now?
We're always looking for ways to introduce product improvements and have been working on the change for a while. We wanted to maintain the great Smarties taste and appearance Canadians have come to expect. In order to meet our quality standards a considerable amount of research and time were required. We’ve now successfully developed recipes with no artificial flavours that meet our standards, including keeping the same great Smarties taste.
- Has the taste changed?
No, Smarties still have the same great taste. In fact, recent improvements in our factory and our processes deliver an even creamier chocolate.
- Are Smarties made without artificial colours too?
Yes, recently we moved to ‘No Artificial Colours’ in our Smarties. The colours are a little bit different. They are pastel-like versions of the old colours, although they’re still vibrant. We've recently developed the blue and green Smarties with no artificial colours and are proud to announce that we now have all eight colours of Smarties in the mix.
- Can I still buy the 'old' Smarties?
No.
- Are the new Smarties peanut-free?
Only Nestlé Fav*rites treat size are always made in a peanut-free facility. While other Nestlé chocolate formats are also made in a peanut-free facility, sometimes we import brands from other Nestlé markets. So, we encourage consumers with peanut allergies to ALWAYS check the label on any food or beverage before consuming.
- Are the new Smarties healthier?
Smarties have always been a treat and that doesn’t change with our move to natural flavours. We are simply addressing a consumer trend to healthier lifestyles and demand for fewer artificial ingredients.
- Has the sugar/fat/carbohydrates/protein/fibre/sodium/calorie content changed?
The nutritional value of Smarties without artificial colours and natural flavours remains the same. Only the flavour components have been changed.
- Where can I buy them?
You can buy Smarties with natural flavours anywhere you’ve purchased Smarties in the past including grocery and drug stores, convenience stores and more.
- How are you communicating the change?
There is a 'Natural Flavours' flash on the front of Smarties packaging and the ‘No Artificial Colours’ is on the back packaging. Information is also posted on our web-sites at www.smarties.ca and www.nestle.ca.
